Średniowieczni malarze i rzeźbiarze funkcjonowali w ramach cechów rzemieślniczych, podobnie jak szewcy, bednarze czy powroźnicy.
Wymagano od nich jedynie sprawności warsztatowej, a nie inwencji i wszechstronnego wykształcenia, które byłoby pomocne w tworzeniu dzieł unikatowych pod względem treści i formy. Przemiana rzemieślnika w artystę nastąpiła dopiero w okresie renesansu.
