Był jednym z kilku polskich malarzy, którzy odnieśli za granicą niekwestionowany sukces. Ten wybitny reprezentant akademizmu wykształcił się w Petersburgu, ale na stałe osiadł w Rzymie. Wyrazem rosnącej sławy Siemiradzkiego było przyznanie mu członkostwa najbardziej prestiżowych w ówczesnej Europie instytucji artystycznych, m.in.
