On September 4-5, 2021, a hybrid scientific conference Sudan Studies will be held at the National Museum in Warsaw. The event is organised in cooperation with the Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology of the University of Warsaw and the University of Durham. In 2017 the Durham University Sudan & Egyptology Study Group (DUSESG) based in the Archaeology Department held the first DUSESG Conference. Following the success of that inaugural conference, DUSESG was invited to host their conference in collaboration with the Cambridge University (2018), Oxford University (2019) and in 2020 it was due to be held for the first time internationally in Italy at the University of Naples 'L'Orientale'. However, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic the conference had to be postponed.
In 2021, our fifth event is the re-named Sudan Studies Research Conference. It will be held in association with the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, University of Warsaw at the National Museum in Warsaw, Poland. This is a significant milestone event for us. We look forward to welcoming you to this our first international and first hybrid event, held both in Warsaw and online simultaneously on Saturday 04 September and Sunday 05 September 2021.
Schedule of task for the 5th edition of the conference is now available. It includes more than 40 speakers from 5 continents in 2 days.
Opening lecture:
Dobrochna Zielińska, PhD (WA UW): “Between Byzantium and Africa. Understanding Medieval Nubian Culture through its Art”.
Key-note lectures:
Dr Daniel Antoine (British Museum, UK): “From the Palaeolithic to the Medieval period, new bioarchaeological insights from the collections curated at the British Museum”.
Prof. Julia Budka (Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany): “Sai Island as a microcosm in New Kingdom Nubia: New perspectives on an Egyptian temple town and its hinterland”.
Dr. Fawzi Hassan (University of Neelain, Sudan): “Education in archaeology at the University of Neelain, Sudan”.
